BEAR-LIKE (DER BÄR IN MIR)
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Switzerland 2019, 91 min Director ROMAN DROUX
Traveling to one of the last true wilderness areas in North America, filmmaker Roman Droux joins noted bear researcher David Bittner deep in the dazzling Alaskan peninsula for an opportunity to study the majestic grizzlies that inhabit it. The two adventurers set up camp in the midst of bear country and quickly come face to face with the harsh reality of survival in such unrelenting terrain. As they become familiar with the regulars, they start to witness bloody fights, touching parental lessons, and other facets of the cycle of life. Shot in the same area where environmentalist Timothy Treadwell met his untimely demise, Bear-Like serves as an interesting counterpoint to Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man, showcasing the tenderness of these giants and allowing us to experience their beauty at a staggeringly close range. The result is a breathtaking and immersive portrait of a world few get to experience. In English, Swiss German, and German with English subtitles
