WONDERLANDS | WEST COAST PREMIERE

Director YUQI KANG (Canada 2024) 100 min

Yuqi Kang’s latest documentary explores the ancient art of freediving with China’s first female freediving champion Jessea Lu, who aims to reach 100 meters deep on a single breath. In 2018, at Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas, Lu suffered a near-fatal four-minute blackout while attempting a depth of 93 meters. Four years later, preparing for her return, she must confront an even greater challenge: herself. This training transcends the physical; she must grapple with her psyche to prevent another hypoxic episode, as each breath demands clarity, listening, and focus. As Lu navigates her emotional past, Kang questions her dual role as both filmmaker and dive partner, blurring the lines between observer and participant. The result is a breathtaking cinematic journey into the blue abyss, capturing Lu’s relentless pursuit of excellence and a transcendent search for enlightenment.
