But after a long and storied career, one thing made clear in this delightful documentary portrait by director Mariem Pérez Riera is that Rita has no intention of resting on her laurels. She continues to light up screens, big and small, and dazzle on stage. Wickedly funny, Rita proves herself to be as riveting a storyteller as she is a performer. Colorful interviews with luminaries Steven Spielberg, Gloria Estefan, Eva Longoria, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Whoopi Goldberg, and Morgan Freeman add layers of depth and insight. With much of the film shot in Rita’s own North Berkeley home, the sweeping views of the Bay remind us that this force of nature shows no signs of coming down to earth anytime soon.

DIRECTOR
Born in Puerto Rico, MARIEM PERÉZ RIERA performed in the leading role of the movie The Two Worlds of Angelita at the age of nine. At that moment, she decided to become a film director. Her first documentary Cuando lo pequeño se hace grande was about Puerto Ricans who fought against the US Navy presence in Vieques. She then debuted as film editor for Talento de barrio, the blockbuster acting debut of rapper Daddy Yankee. In 2005, she founded her own production company, Maramara Films, and in 2007, she co-directed and edited her first feature Maldeamores. Mariem has a BA in film studies from the University of Miami and a Continuation Studies degree with an emphasis on Documentary and Editing from NYU and EICTV in Havana, Cuba.
