THE NEW CORPORATION: THE UNFORTUNATELY NECESSARY SEQUEL

ART OF IMPACT

Canada 2020, 106 min Directors JENNIFER ABBOTT and JOEL BAKAN
In 2003, the award-winning The Corporation probed the legal decision to define corporations as persons and grant them the same rights as people. Eighteen years later, The New Corporation provides a hard-hitting follow-up, examining new developments in the far-reaching power that corporations have in every aspect of our lives. As the realities of economic collapse, climate crisis, and crumbling democracy loom large, we explore just how the amoral and ruinous actions of the corporate world are directly responsible for threatening freedoms across the globe. Directors Jennifer Abbott—whose film The Magnitude of All Things is also playing DocLands this year—and Joel Bakan pull no punches when tackling the political and social stranglehold companies have attained as they attempt to rebrand themselves as socially responsible. Boasting a wide panel of experts and activists including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Angela Davis, Anand Giridharadas, and congresswoman Katie Porter, The New Corporation is a timely exposé that is a much-needed call to action.
